I feel like a lot of people in the education system have a naturalistic perspective on learning. Our teachers are the ones at the forefront of the classroom and are the ones who are teaching our kids everything they need to know. I feel like the ones in leadership are not as attuned to recreating our education system as teachers in the classroom are unless they have had experience teaching themselves. I feel like we can take this naturalistic perspective on learning and transform it into something that every student will want to learn. So often we just teach the information that we are given as teachers and we don’t recognize that sometimes the information we learn is not helpful in the real world because we are trained to just teach the curriculum that we are given. In order to start recreating our education system and the way we learn, I believe we need to start adding life lessons in the classroom as an add on to the curriculum. We need to start teaching our students that life is always about learning no matter what age you are. Anything can be a learning topic if we make the effort to make a difference in another person’s life.
I feel like for me I am looking at the whole learning environment instead of just focusing on the pieces of the curriculum that I am given. I recently heard from a speaker that my school brought in that taught us how we can be personable with our students. Before that, I generally would not be very personable and friendly to my students that I send out texts and emails to. That speaker, his name was Tony, changed my life in a good way. Instead of focusing on the job and following what I am told to do, I am now trying to make an extra effort in the way I approach talking with my students. He greatly changed my perspective in the best way that every could have happened to me.
For me, I feel like I am reactive most times instead of being proactive. I tend to make my decisions based off of emotion instead of logic. Sometimes its a good thing and sometimes its a bad thing. I usually look to a leader in my profession and only do what they tell me to do instead of actually finding projects to do on my own and to better reach out to the community myself. I definitely need to work on being proactive and sometimes I am. Right now I am taking control of my learning with ADL and I am not just waiting on the professor to tell me what to do next. I am kind of both reactive and proactive but I can definitely work on both to become a better educator to my students.
